I freeze cabbage all the time. We never use an entire head. I just pop it in a ziplock bag and freeze. It will be soggy after it thaws, so it won't be any good for slaw (although there is a recipe for freezer slaw, but I've never tried it.) I am just cooking it, anyway, so it doesn't bother me.
Hmmm.... as a matter of fact, I have half a head in there now. I should probably use it for dinner tonight! :-)
