you have lots of options for containers. I sometimes use the gladware type containers. You can also flash freeze items and then put them in a large ziploc container and pull out what you need. Flash freezing means putting your items on a cookie sheet and freezing then when you put them in a freezer bag they don't stick together.
Alot of folks are wary of using plastic. You can use paper plates and then slip them into a plastic bag. If you are weary of plastic you can put things like chilli and soup in freezer jars.
One thing that I make that is a real money saver for me if fat free refried beans that I turn into burritos once a week.
I will soak 3 cups of dried beans over night. Then I put these beans in my 2.5 quart crock and fill the crock up with water. I do not add seasoning or tomatoes at this point as I read that it can make your beans tough. I cook the beans on high 6-8 hours.
then I blend them with taco seasoning and ro-tel.
This will make 3 quarts of beans. I freeze this mixture in ziploc freezer bags.
One quart bag will feed my family of 4 dinner. 3 cups of dried beans cost about 50cents and makes 3 quarts of refried beans. I did the math on this and it would work out to 7cents a can if I used the caned stuff.
Hope this helps
