Hi,
I bought mine for freezing the venison that we get in the fall from hunting. So, buying meat in bulk when it is cheaper woudl be a great way to save some money. It is a little tricky sealing the raw meat because it can suck out the juices--so either partially freezing and then bagging, or putting a folded napkin below the seal area would work well. (I use the folded napkin--the juices get absorbed before hitting the area that would be sealed.)
I have heard of people sealing up important documents or silver to prevent water damage/tarnishing.
Raw rice doesn't work well to seal--it usually pokes through the bags.
I have used the off brand bags from Menards and they have worked well for us. (Cheaper than the Food Saver brand.)
I know there is Yahoo group titled preserving or food storage---they cover things like dehydrating and other ways to store food, including using the Sealers. Maybe you want to look them up.
