India's Current Situation
India is one of the top three economies in the world, but looking at corruption, India sinks to number 87. In other words, it means 86 other nations have less corruption than India. Corruption plays a significant role in keeping poverty, illiteracy and other social ills in place. The proposed solution:
To curb the corruption, Social activists like Shanti Bhushan, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, Justice N. Santosh Hegde, renowned advocate Prashant Bhushan, former chief election commissioner J. M. Lyngdoh drafted Jan Lokpal bill.
According to Jan Lokpal Bill, Jan Lokpal an independent body like the Election Commission would be created which would have the power to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission.
Why and how Anna Hazare protesting now?
On April 5 2011, Anna Hazare started a 'fast unto death' to exert pressure on the Government of India to enact a strong anti-corruption act as envisaged in the Jan Lokpal Bill, a law that will have the power to initiate suo moto action (Suo motu, meaning "on its own motion") or receive complaints of corruption from the general public. to deal with corruption in public offices.
