Mastercook is the perfect recipe software. You can organize your recipes by
setting up cookbooks. You can import and export in text format. It's very
easy to import recipes using the Import Assistant. (Copy recipe and paste
into the Import Assistant then format then import). You can also design
menus, create meals using a calendar and create a shopping list from either
the menus or the calendar of meals. I've been using Mastercook for over 15
years and I still love it. I have not found a program with it's
functionality or ease of use.
If you want to import some free Mastercook cookbooks you can go to:
http://www.madsrecipes.com/ Mad's Recipe Emporium where you'll find a lot of
Food Network cookbooks ready to import. Think Ina Garten, Alton Brown,
Michelle Urvater...
Mastercook seems to have issues Windows 7 as the program crashed three
times in one year which is a record. I have since gone back to using Windows
XP since the program is more stable.
In case you can't tell I LOVE Mastercook.
MacGourmet is a good choice if you are using a Mac.
I've used both these programs with great success.
30 Day Gourmet Advantage Software: I don't like the newest version as the
interface is not as nice as the older one. Also, if you want to upgrade to
the newest version and want to return to the older version good luck! The
old version will not reinstall unless you reinstall Windows. How do I know
this? I've done it.
Also, 30 Day Gourmet uses a proprietary format for most things. It does not
import text files.
I was not thrilled with Cook'N 9. The program has an antiqued old-style
Windows interface. This program does not import Mastercook files either. Nor
does it import text files. Also, if you decide to purchase this product buy
it from Amazon or some place like it. Do not buy it directly from DVO
Enterprises as it took me almost 6 months to get a refund after I canceled
the order and returned the merchandise. This was after I had to contact the
State of Utah Consumer Affairs department. You can read my Amazon review
here:

You can go to CNET and download some trial files to see what programs you
like for almost any recipe program including Cook'N.
Your best bet is Mastercook followed by MacGourmet.
