The cold water trick works for packaged fish for the same day thawing... As
for cooking a roast of beef or pork, I put it in the crock pot frozen in the
morning and it is usually cooked by evening but that is leaving the crock
pot on high... I've also cooked roasts of beef and pork from frozen state in
my oven as well. Whole chicken and turkeys I make sure are thawed
completely.
I am loving the info I am getting from this group.

Depends on the cut somewhat. With ground beef, I just cook it direct from
frozen, constantly turning it and scraping off the cooked surface of the
block as I go. With whole chickens or a whole roast of some other kind, I
would probably not try to cook it from frozen. For everything in between, I
defrost in the microwave. I believe cold water can be used to accelerate the
defrosting process for large cuts, but I've never done that myself and I
don't think it would work on the same day.
