Since we don't mind eating the same thing a lot, instead of doing 3
meals' worth of 10 different recipes, I'm going to do 4 meals' worth of
7 or 8 recipes after I get paid on August 1. I've just gone back to work
after a five-week furlough, so it's really important to me this month to
save money. This time around, I'm sticking with the cheap and easy end
of my repertoire, which is mostly vegetarian peasant food.
Oh, by the way, hi, everyone. I'm Serene, and I live in Oakland. My
household isn't vegetarian, but we don't eat meat very often, and we
like vegetarian food. I have a small, apartment-size fridge with a top
freezer, so I'll be doing the record-album thing (I'm old enough to
remember when that was your only choice!), stacking frozen freezer bags
on end.
I get paid on a Monday (well, late Sunday night), and I'm off on
Thursday, so my current plan is to shop on Thursday (the 4th), and cook
on Saturday (the 6th).
Here's the current plan, subject to change. I'll also be doubling or
tripling anything I happen to cook this week and next that seems very
freezable.
Bean burritos
Spaghetti sauce
Sloppy joes (TVP)
Chili
Red beans and rice
Mashed potatoes and chickpea gravy
Curry
And maybe a pot of potato soup.
I look forward to reading the archives and getting to know people here.
I've done a lot of bulk cooking over the years, including weeks' worth
for a family member whose partner was dying and she couldn't deal with
cooking (doesn't like it) on top of all the other things she had to do),
but never a month's worth, and never in quite this organized a fashion.
Serene
